Whizz seeks a Legal & Compliance Counsel to establish and direct its internal legal operations from the foundation. Operating within the e-bike subscription sector, Whizz supplies affordable rental subscriptions to independent delivery workers across the United States, partnering with major platforms like DoorDash and Grubhub. Managing a large fleet of electric two-wheelers, the organization focuses on serving gig economy workers and scaling rapidly.
This position is suited for a proactive legal professional with senior startup experience who can independently manage regulatory matters, draft and negotiate commercial agreements, and handle debt recovery and litigation efforts. The Counsel will advise company leadership on legal risks, support new market expansions, and coordinate with finance and operations to protect company assets and property.
Responsibilities
- Deliver daily legal guidance, draft and evaluate agreements, and counsel leadership regarding regulatory obligations
- Strengthen customer terms and contracts to safeguard company interests, lower payment conflicts, and aid in property and debt recovery
- Facilitate new product rollouts and market expansions while maintaining adherence to regional regulations
- Manage debt recovery processes ranging from demand notices and negotiations to filing legal actions against delinquent clients
- Manage commercial disputes and litigation, draft court paperwork, and represent the business or coordinate with external attorneys
- Enforce judgments and settlements to retrieve outstanding debts and company assets
- Manage interactions with law enforcement and regulatory agencies concerning fraud, theft, or unreturned equipment
- Collaborate with the operations and finance departments to organize evidence, prioritize cases, and monitor legal expenses
Requirements
- Demonstrated background in a senior legal capacity within a startup or fast-growing enterprise
- Strong project management skills
- Ability to independently evaluate legal scenarios, research applicable laws, and provide practical advice
- Resourceful and proactive approach to problem-solving and communication
- Proficiency in finding, reviewing, and interpreting legal and regulatory data via databases and regulatory agencies
